the asphodel book shop holds a special place
in cleveland literary history. it sold a wide variety of cutting-edge
literature, and was instrumental in promoting the work of cleveland
poets of the 1960s such as d.a. levy and tom kryss. operated
by james r. lowell first in the old arcade, then on w. 6th st.,
the asphodel was raided on dec. 1, 1966, and lowell was arrested
along with levy for pandering obscenity. the charges were later
dropped. lowell fled cleveland for the bucolic expanses of burton
ohio, where he operated the asphodel book shop out of his basement
until his death in 2004.
